Emergency Lighting is a luminaire provided in the event of an emergency where there is a loss of power/ mains power failure. It can be maintained or non-maintained meaning, it switches on automatically (non-maintained) or is constantly operating (maintained). Emergency Lighting also ensures that escape routes are illuminated for users to safely identify and use when required such as in the event of a hazard that would require people to leave the building. They are often found in commercial and retail environments where there is a high occupancy level.
