MCBs & Blanks
Benefits at a glance:
- Protect circuits from overcurrent
- Isolate individual circuits on the network when needed
- Safer than using fuse wire, and reusable
- Easily removable blanks to fill board gaps
MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) are housed inside the distribution board. They protect circuits from overcurrent by switching off the circuit during any abnormal condition in the network such as a short circuit. The key advantage of MCBs over fuses —which they’re replacing everywhere— is that they aren’t destroyed when they trip; they’re reusable. They also offer the benefit of being able to independently isolate individual circuits within a system when properly integrated into a distribution board. No more killing power to the TV just to change a lightbulb.
Note: MCBs protect circuits. They do not protect humans from shock caused by earth leakage. That’s down to RCBs/RCBOs.
If a distribution board isn’t fully filled it has to be covered up with blanks. Blanks fill in the unused positions on a distribution board and protect against exposure to the live components. They can be removed and replaced with MCBs if the network needs expanding in the future.
