3 Core SWA is a 3-strand variant of steel wire armoured cable (SWA) with LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) sheathing, meaning it is suitable for installation where smoke emissions and toxic fumes could be potentially life-threatening, such as in hospitals etc. They are made up of a set of insulated twisted copper wires coloured brown, blue/green, and yellow that are encased in a black metal sheath.
It can also be attached to the outside of buildings and structures using armoured cable cleats. It is also suitable for underground burial since the steel wire armour makes the insulating layers beneath mechanically protected.
The SWA 3 Core cabling consists of plain annealed stranded copper for the cores. The cores are insulated with a cross-linked polyethylene coating with bedding and sheathing made from PVC. The wire armour offers protection beneath the sheathing. It can be installed in several ways; including in duct, clipped directly to a surface, on tray, in basket or free air. It can also be embedded in concrete or laid direct in ground in free draining soil.
Three core SWA Cables are live, neutral and earth, unlike two core which is only live and neutral. They are frequently utilized to offer mains power to houses, and outdoor structures, such as sheds. ย 3 Core SWA cables are perfect for garden lighting over longer distances; outdoor security lighting; high-output power tools, for example, in a shed or out-building; electric gates; and shed or outhouse heating.
