Storm Glands

A single gland solution to cover a range of cable types is taking the industry by storm

Storm glands are high-quality cable gland alternatives to BW and CW glands and have been taking the industry by storm since their introduction. They combine speed, and advanced specifications, alongside a range of unique qualities for an unbeatable and unmatched, cable gland solution.

Cable glands are used to seal and secure the ends of cables to plugs, terminals, enclosures, or electrical equipment.

Key features of the storm cable glands at a glance:

  • Manufactured using halogen-free polyamide material for a non-corrosive, UV-stabilised, and zero halogen cable management solution.
  • Features anti-rotational technology for protection against rotation of cable pulling
  • Improved IP68 ingress protection rating.
  • Longer thread lengths compared to standard-type glands i.e. Storm20s to 32 (1mm) and Storm40 to 63 (22mm).

Each cable gland from the SWA Storm range features these incredible capabilities and some more. Read on to find out more about the storm glands we offer, including the features that make SWA Storm glands such a popular choice in the electrical industry.

Our Storm cable glands are faster and easier to install compared to old, conventionally armoured cable glands.

We offer the SWA Storm20S M20S 20mm IP68 LSF Armoured Cable Glands in a pack of two.

The SWA Storm20S is a storm gland cable management tool used to securely seal the ends of cables and then secure them to the electrical equipment they are powered by, ensuring they are not easily pulled or twisted out of place. It is suitable for a wide range of electrical systems in power, data centres, and infrastructure applications.

The Storm20s gland is also manufactured using halogen-free polyamide material which makes it ideal for use in a range of buildings and public spaces, even in wet underground applications. The polyamide material makes it a UV-stabilised, zero-halogen, and non-corrosive cable management tool.

It also offers an improved IP68 ingress protection rating protecting it against solid, dust ingress, and high-pressure water jets allowing for minimal damage when submerged in up to 1.5 metres of water for 30 minutes!

In addition, the SWA Storm20S storm cable gland has an M20 x 1.5mm entry thread with a 17mm thread length and 2.5NM cap tightening torque.

It also comes supplied with a standard lockout to help secure the cable gland into position, an earth tag that provides a secure earth bond attachment for your cable glands, and a shroud for added protection. The earth tag is designed to safely channel electricity to the earth in the event of a fault, helping to keep users who make contact with the cable gland safe.

What cables will the Storm20S cable gland accept?

It will accept cables with a maximum inner sheathing of 12mm, an outer sheathing or cables with a 10.5mm to 16mm diameter, and armoured wires ranging from 0.80mm to 1.25mm.

The SWA Storm20 M20 x 1.5mm Armoured cable gland is also a type of SWA storm gland which we offer in a pack of 2. It features anti-rotational technology – as standard for this range – which is designed to prevent potential damage caused by cable rotation during installation or from cable pulling. In addition, it is constructed from halogen-free LSF armoured and poly-amide material that is ideal for many building and public space installations, including in wet or underground environments. Furthermore, the Storm20 is a fast-fitting and easy-to-install cable management tool for sealing the ends of cables securely, ensuring the cable gland is not easily pulled or twisted out of place.

Some key features of the SWA storm cable Storm20 include an M20 x 1.5mm entry thread with a 17mm thread length.

What cables will the Storm20 cable gland accept?

It will accept cables with a maximum inner sheathing of 16mm, an outer sheathing or cables with a 15.5mm to 21mm diameter, and armoured wires ranging from 0.80mm to 1.25mm.

Overall, it has the same key features as the aforementioned Storm20s storm glands and complies with BS EN 62444:2013.

Difference between M20 thread and M20s thread cable glands:

The M20s cable gland uses a silica gel for the inner sheathing material, allowing it to withstand higher temperatures for extended periods of time.

This is consistent with other ‘S’ SWA storm cable glands.

Last but certainly not least, we also offer the Storm25 cable gland, which is part of the innovative and revolutionary, no need for a shroud, Storm SWA cables. It is also approved for BS EN 62444:2013 standards with multiple cable entries, non-corrosive, UV stabilised and zero-halogen material. Hence, it is durable on its own without the need for a shroud. The Storm25 storm gland has an M25 x 1.5mm entry thread, a 17mm thread, and comes with a standard locknut and earth tag.

Ultimately, the anti-rotational technology, halogen-free polyamide construction, and incredibly speedy installation capabilities continue to make the SWA popular amongst several employees in the force… a truly innovative and revolutionary cable management tool.

What cables will the Storm25 cable gland accept?

It will accept cables with a maximum inner sheathing of 20.5mm, an outer sheathing or cables with a 20.50mm to 27.50mm diameter, and armoured wires ranging from 1.20mm to 1.60mm.

Deciding what size gland fits your SWA cable:

Different cable diameter sizes and core sizes will require different cable gland sizes. Before choosing a cable gland, there are a few factors to consider.

  • The cable’s diameter.
  • The cable’s construction size.
  • The material the cable is made from.

For SWA armoured cables:

  • The diameter of the inner sheath.
  • The shroud.
  • The short circuit fault rating of the cable armour.
  • The type and size of the armour braid.
  • Whether it’s for indoor or outdoor use.

*Generally for indoor use, it is advised to use a cable gland with a BW prefix, and for outdoor use, a cable gland with a CW prefix.

In conclusion, without the appropriate cable management tool, your installation work can be messy, making working difficult and even unsafe. That is why it is important to invest in a high-quality cable management solution for a smooth installation process. This explains why the storm cable glands have gone down a ‘storm’ with several electricals.
