FireAngel Home Security & Safety – Smoke and Heat Alarms

FireAngel is a market leader in smoke and heat alarms/detectors with over 90% of the UK’s Fire and Rescue Service putting their trust in FireAngel home safety devices.

Reasons for this include:

  • In-house and third-party testing on all devices to ensure the highest quality, assured safety and protection standards.
  • Testing of all devices and sensors in real smoke to ensure a rapid response to fires.
  • All device batteries are tested for endurance and operation, with batteries carefully chosen for each product.

Within the Building Regulations, fire safety is of utmost importance, with requirements on identifying early signs of fires, escape routes, preventing the spread of fire, and providing access to firefighting facilities.

Hence, it is paramount to invest in the best quality and most appropriate fire detection devices. And, ensuring they are regularly tested and maintained is just as important!

FireAngel Heat Alarms

Heat alarms are designed to detect temperature rises to avoid false alarms in areas prone to nuisance alarms. Heat alarms are ideal for kitchens, where smoke from cooking often triggers smoke alarms unnecessarily. Instead, they alert you only when the temperature rises to a level that could indicate a fire. This allows for early fire warnings without the risk of nuisance alarms.

FireAngel Carbon Monoxide Alarm

FireAngel carbon monoxide alarms have a high-performance electrochemical sensor designed to detect the presence of carbon monoxide (CO).

Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer because it is colourless, odourless, and nearly impossible to detect. It is a highly poisonous gas which can result in paralysis, brain damage, and even death if undetected.

In England and Wales, approximately 40 deaths and 200 to 250 non-fatal carbon monoxide poisonings each year, resulting in hospital admission.

In addition, the ‘CO-Gas Safety’s’ data on unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning from all carbon-based fuels also highlights the grave fact that there are roughly 30 deaths per year from carbon monoxide poisoning. Hence all the data and research point to the huge dangers of undetected carbon monoxide gases.

So, where can carbon monoxide gas come from in the home:

  • Fires.
  • Gasoline-powered generators.
  • Indoor charcoal grills.
  • Wood or coal-burning fires.
  • Long burners.

Fortunately, there are carbon monoxide alarms and detectors designed to minimise and prevent the risk of carbon monoxide poising, with FireAngel carbon monoxide alarms featuring the latest and highest quality sensors that provide fast response alerts of the presence of carbon monoxide.

Which alarm sensor goes where?

Heat Alarms

These are ideal in areas where dust, fumes, and moisture can cause nuisance alarms such as kitchens, laundry and boiler rooms, lofts, and garages.

According to the latest British Standards, place heat alarms on the ceiling, centrally in the room, within 3M of every escape door and bedroom door to ensure audibility. They also recommend 300mm from walls & light fittings to minimise the risk of blocked airways from installation in ‘dead air’ spaces. In buildings with peaked and sloped ceilings, position heat alarms 150mm vertically down from the apex.

In addition, the UK Fire and Rescue services advise that you always install heat alarms in kitchens as part of your home’s fire protection system.

Smoke Alarms

These are suitable for most rooms, particularly rooms used regularly and with a 4 °C and 38 °C room temperature. They recommend using in all circulation areas, such as landings, hallways and bedrooms, airing/meter cupboards, and sitting rooms.

The latest British standards recommend the same installation guides as heat alarms. They especially recommend positioning alrms between high-risk rooms and bedrooms. Additionally, in buildings with peaked or sloped ceilings, install smoke alarms at a maximum of 600mm vertically down from the apex.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

To protect your home and loved ones from the silent killer known as carbon monoxide, install carbon monoxide alarms in all rooms with fuel-burning appliances, such as the kitchen, living room, and bedroom.

Additionally, the British EN50292 Standards recommend installing carbon monoxide alarms between 1m and 3m from all potential sources of carbon monoxide (fuel-burning appliances) and 300mm from walls and light fittings. If you place the alarm near fuel-burning appliances in confined spaces such as a boiler room, position it on the ceiling immediately outside the room. Furthermore, even without fuel-burning appliances, place the alarm at breathing height such as your bed’s head height.
