WAGO Cable Connectors

Why more and more electricians have turned to WAGO connectors

What are electrical cable connectors?

Electrical cable connectors, also referred to as terminals, are wiring accessories used to safely and securely connect or join multiple wires together onto a circuit. They feature an insulated housing that can safely carry the wires’ current.

What are WAGO cable connectors?

Wago connectors are an increasingly popular wire connector choice for electrical contractors. This is largely due to their world-leading spring clamp connection technology that ensures a simplified and secure wire connection. Wago was the first company to switch from traditional tools and screws to the now popularly used spring pressure technology.

They are a hassle-free wiring solution that enables you to join two or more pieces of electrical wires together quickly and easily, whilst benefiting from vibration-resistance and maintenance-free connections. We will delve further into more of the benefits of Wago’s cable connectors later in the blog.

Types of WAGO connectors

Wago developed three main types of wire connectors consisting of two types of spring clamp connectors, and push-in wire connectors.

Wago 222-series

The WAGO 222-series is the classic and original Wago cable connector introduced in 2003. It is reusable and utilises a compact cage lever which ensures ease of use as you simply flip the lever to secure or release a connection. It can connect solid, stranded, and fine-stranded conductors without any hassle. In addition, it can be used in a range of applications such as in lighting fixtures, sun blinds, awnings, doors, gate controls, inter phones, pumps, loudspeakers, etc.

  • The Wago 222-412 32A 2 Way Compact Lever Operated Cable Splicing Connector Terminal Block is a 2-way terminal block with a maximum current rating of 32A and voltage rating of 400V. It is designed for connecting solid, stranded, and fine-stranded conductors without the need for additional tools. The solid and stranded conductor sizes range from 0.08mm²-2.5mm² whilst the fine stranded conductor size ranges from 0.08mm²-4mm².

In terms of construction, it utilises a simple button-operated lever clamp system that ensures a fast, hassle-free, and secure termination of cables. It also features two test ports for easy testing of all standard test probes and a reduced operating force for easy splice termination. It also has a length indicator on the casing which details the correct length the wire should be stripped to. Finally, thanks to its compact housing profile, it is ideal for use in installations where spacing may be restricted, or where you may need to maximise wiring space in restricted environments such as in junction boxes.

We also stock the 3 way and 5 way versions of the Wago 222 Compact Lever Operated Cable Splicing Connector Terminal Blocks:

Wago 221-series

These are the newest Wago spring clamp connectors with a smaller and transparent housing. This allows you to actually see the wire touching the insider connector, easily ensure that the connector and wires are inserted correctly, confirm the conductor’s depth, as well as strip to the correct length.

The Wago 221-series lever nuts are all rated at a maximum voltage of 450 volts. They allow for solid, stranded, or fine-stranded cables to be connected, all without requiring tools for completion. They also feature a length indicator that details the correct length the wire should be stripped to, helping to protect all live conductors against accidental contact. For added safety, they also come supplied with two test ports that allow for easy testing of all standard test probes, and a reduced operating force for easy splice termination.

Overall, the Wago 221-series provides an easy plug-in mounting installation process which saves you time and money with its simple and effective compact design.

  1. Use a wire cutter to remove the appropriate level of insulation.
  2. Lift the lever connector and then insert the wire.
  3. Once the wire is inserted, shut the lever connector.
  4. Finally, ensure you test the voltage found on the top of the compact wire connector.

Wago connectors vs traditional cable connectors

  • Prevents electricians from having to use a screwdriver on a potentially live current, thereby reducing the risk of electrical shocks.
  • Maintenance-free and easy-to-replace terminal strips whilst minimising shocks, short circuits, and other risks.
  • Easy to quickly remove and replace wires as the wires are not twisted together.
  • Ability to visually confirm that the electrical connections are safe.
  • High-quality material construction which is less susceptible to brittle and screw head damage than traditional cable connectors.

Key benefits of Wago cable connector and their connection technology:

  • Reduced wiring time by up to 50% which in turn reduces your labour costs.
  • The simple and sturdy lever clamp system protects the conductor from any accidental damage or from coming loose.
  • Features a length indicator letting you know the appropriate length the wire should be stripped to, eliminating the danger of over or under-stripping the conductor.
  • Vibration-proof, reliable and secure connections ensured.
  • Maintenance-free spring pressure connection technology
  • Products with CAGE CLAMP® technology can also be used in harsh environments.
  • Provides an easy plug-in mounting installation process which ensures time and money savings.
